America’s Cup on final lap

July 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

America's Cup 2007Team Alinghi is leading 4 -2 against Emirates Team New Zealand.  With Alinghi winning the last 3 races in succession, it looks like Alinghi is going to wrap up the race today to successfully defend the 32nd edition of America’s Cup.  The biggest challenge is for the Kiwis to come up with something extraordinary to prevent Team Alinghi its fourth successive win.

To the die hard fans of Emirates Team New Zealand, they only have three more races to win and the Auld Mug will be going back to Auckland. The few days break is giving the Kiwis enough time to review their strategy and gain strength to mount a stronger challenge to Team Alinghi.

Team Alinghi won the 31st edition of America’s Cup on 23 March, 2003 in Auckland defeating Team New Zealand creating historic to bring the Auld Mug back to Europe for the first time its 152 years history. Team Alinghi has benefit of having Grant Simmer as design team coordinator. Grant Simmer was a team member of Australia II which won the America’s Cup at New York Yacht Club in 1983. That’s was the first time America’s Cup left the shore of USA and it has never returned.

Emirates Team New Zealand had to go through the qualifying round to win the Louis Vuitton Cup by defeating Italy’s Luna Rossa 5-0. This gave them the slot to challenge Team Alinghi for the 32nd edition of America’s Cup. Emirates Team New Zealand is represented by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Club.

In a few hours, the moment of truth will arrive.  We will know the results of Race 7 of the 32nd edition of America’s Cup.
