Finally, the Beijing Olympics is over. Life is back to normal again. No more fighting over which channel to watch in Astro. With 10 channels of Olympics programs, I spend most of my time channel surfing searching for my favorite sports like badminton, volleyball, beach volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, synchronize swimming and athletics. There are other sports which i hate to watch because I find them extremely boring like equestrian and sailing.
I was very impressed with the Beijing Olympics organizing committee which delivered one of the best Olympics in recent years. In fact, I find it as the best. The opening ceremony was very impressive and it brought China and the Chinese culture to the world. The opening ceremony showcased the very best of China like tai-chi, Confucius, Cheng He, Chinese opera, puppet show, spectacular fireworks. They even brough Sarah Brightman and China’s Liu Huan to sing the Olympics song “You and Me”.
Li Ning, top gymnast in the 80’s, was floating across the Bird Nest stadium to the cauldron of the Beijing Olympics Games before he lit the Olympics flame.
The closing ceremony was equally impressive too. China paraded their superstars like Jackie Chan, Wang Lee Hom, Andy Lau, Stephanie Sun and Kelly Chen to perform for the world. Placido Domingo and China’s Song Zuying sang “Ài de Huǒyàn (The Flame of Love).
London paraded their superstar to the world when after they received the Olympics Flag. They have David Beckham, Leona Lewis, Jimmy Page, lead guitarist from Led Zeppelin together with the famous London Bus. David Beckham kicked a football to the crowd but it landed on the field. A lucky volunteer got the ball.
The creative director for both events was Zhang YiMou, the director for the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” did a splendid job in creating such both spectacular events.
From sports performance, China emerged as the top sporting nation for the first time to top the medal tally with 51 gold medals, followed by USA with 36 gold medals and Russia with 23 gold medals.
In four years time, we will be in London to witness the greatest show on earth - the Olympics Games.
