Computer gadgets are getting cheaper

October 29th, 2007 · 2 Comments

When the prices of commodities are going up, prices of computer gadgets are coming down. They are getting cheaper in term of dollars and increase in value in term of performance and functionalities.

Two years ago, I bought a Samsung 8x DVD RW for Double Layer recording at a cost of RM300+. The unit has since broken down due to excessive use, so I had to replace it with a new one. I was shocked when I saw a LiteOn 20X Super AllWrite with Double Layer recording only cost me RM105. Since it was so cheap, I didn’t bother to ask for a discount. Just paid and brought it back to fix it onto my computer.

In future, I won’t waste time trying to figure out how to repair a failed unit. The amount of time wasted and the risk of not doing any backup is simply too great.

This reminds me of Moore’s Law which says the number of transistors in an integrated circuit will double every two years and it will be inexpensive. This observation was made in 1965 by Gordon E. Moore who was a co-founder of Intel. He co-founded Intel together with Andy Groove and Robert Noyce.

I was lucky to have the opportunity to meet with these brilliant people when I worked for Intel many years ago.
