When I was doing my Master in Business Administration program, the students were constantly reminded not to plagiarize. Everyone needs to do their assignments or thesis on their own. It’s the effort the students put into the research that counts. Never try to copy someone’s work and claim as their own. This is plagiarizing.
The lecturers would remind us of the risk of being caught was simply too great. Students can get kicked out from MBA School if they are caught for plagiarizing.
Every lecturer would make sure that we know how to cite examples or phrases from publications. Some of them would even go as far as demonstrating how to setup footer in Microsoft Word. That’s how serious my lecturers could be when it comes to putting in your own effort.
With so much fear planted in our mind, we never even dare to try to plagiarize any work to claim as ours.
Since lecturers read a lot of books, magazines and journals, they were able to differentiate between original work or a plagiarize work. Nowadays, lecturers asked for softcopy of the assignments or thesis. Students may not know the intention of the lecturers. Lecturers can validate the work of their students for any possible plagiarism online.
Plagiarism is not only limited to academic world. Professionals are also subjected to scrutiny on their work. Professionals have to make sure their work is original because their clients can also check against possible plagiarism by checking it online.
It’s better to produce your own work rather than to plagiarize. The penalty is too severe for anyone to risk their professional career and reputation if caught.

actually in my line of work it is not possible to produce original work except where one is working purely in research. And even then, it is absolutely necessary to make appropriate references to work that other learned colleagues have undertaken before. It’s not called plagiarism - it’s just good practice to have decent references as the entire profession of engineering is based on empirical evidence :)
