Juggling time between home, office, friends and the cyberspace

My house went through a facelift

December 4th, 2007 · No Comments

My neighbors are starting to move out from the neighborhood. They began moving out since middle of last year. Thus, this fulfills the 10-year cycle home relocation prophecy. When I moved into my house 10 years ago, I was told that house-owners will generally move to a new house, which is better and bigger, or they have to invest some money in upgrading their existing house. At that time, I was younger and naïve, not knowing the challenge in owning and maintaining a house.

From the seventh year onwards, we started to experience problems with the house like roof and plumbing leakage, paint wearing out during to tropical weather and walls start to crack. The proud feeling of owning the house started to fade. It was a time to make the big decision to either do a major repair to give the house a facelift or move to a new house.

I started by checking out on the foreclosure listings to find houses put up for sales by the financial institutions and also the mortgage rates offered by these financial institutions. At the same time, at the back of my mind, I did not wish to go through the hassle of relocating to a new house which was a nightmare for me. Anyhow, I did get a few moving quotes from companies that specialize in relocation.

Finally, I decided to stay put and had my house go though a major repair in the eight year. Now, I am staying a newly refurbished house minus a few nice neighbors who decided to move out. We remain as close friends and have been visiting each others often.
