The mooncake festival is around the corner again. I used to enjoy mooncake festival for two reasons. One, I get to eat the sweet mooncakes. Two, I get to play lanterns. I think most kids will love both of them.
Sometimes, my cousins and I will make lanterns from tin cans. It was a fun experience making lanterns out from Milo tins. One thing for sure, the lanterns will not burn no matter how you play with it. Sometimes, other kids may want to disturb you when you are playing with you lantern, you just need to touch them with your hot lantern. This will teach them a lesson and you get your peace for the whole evening.
Today, mooncake festival has become more commercialize. Besides the traditional lanterns, there are modern lanterns that run on battery with bulbs and music. Parents, like me, will prefer the modern lanterns because of convinience. I do not have to keep lighting the candles whenever the light goes off.
Nowadays, buying mooncakes can be a challenge. There are so many companies selling mooncakes like Tai Thong, Kam Lun Thai, etc. Hotels have jump onto the mooncake bandwagon. Not only the local companies are selling mooncakes, ice cream parlors like Haagen-Dazs, are selling their version of ice cream mooncakes. Apart from the traditional flavors, there are also so many new flavors to choose from. However, my favorite flavors remain the same throughout the years.
Last week, I surprised the promoter of a mooncake outlet in one of the shopping mall when I took less than a minute to choose what I wanted. She was so surprised that she asked, “You can select the flavors you wanted so quickly?” I always know what I wanted to buy. I only trust the traditional flavors.
So, enjoy the mooncake festival and happy playing with lanterns with your kids.
