Prices of commodities and food are simply skyrocketing these days. It’s usual for retailers or food outlet operators to increase their food prices whenever there is a slight increase in any of the ingredient. Not only is the cost of goods being passed on to the consumers, there are people who take the opportunities to make extra profit.
The price of wheat flour has gone up from RM1.70 per kilogram to RM2.00 on Sept 15 and to RM2.60 on Oct 16.
Last weekend, I went through a few shocking experience to see how prices are being jacked up just to compensate for the increase in wheat flour’s price. Profit taking is rampant. Every Saturday, my daughter will buy a three pieces of bun from Bread Story which cost RM2.50 and now, it cost Rm2.90. I knew it was no point arguing with the workers as they were only doing their job. It’s their bosses who made the decision.
Later I went for a badminton game and bought the usual isotonic drinks from the canteen in the badminton hall. The price has increased from RM1.60 to RM1.80.
Since the business people are making these decisions to enrich themselves, how about consumers like us? What can we do to make the best of our hard earned money? Well, I have decided that I will only buy what I need. Avoid spending if I can, especially on the isotonic drinks. I will bring my own water for my badminton game.
Then, what will happen to these greedy business people? I hope all consumers will take similar action and this will hurt their revenue. Eventually, it will reach the tipping point where they will not have anymore profit. Collectively, consumers can drive these greedy business people out of business.
Not only will business people get hurt, in some countries, the government of the day will suffer as well when voters register their protest in the ballot.
