Is Malaysia first Angkasawan chosen based on the ‘gondolier selection principle’? Maybe I should explain what the ‘gondolier selection principle’ is all about? A few years ago, I went on vacation to Venice and like every tourist who went to Venice, a gondola ride is almost a certain thing to do.
The pricing for a gondola ride is determined by the route or distance of the ride. You can have a singing gondolier if you pay more. This is a simple decision to make. Nevertheless, how do you get the most out from a gondola ride? The gondolas are very well maintained and looked nice. Whichever one you chose will definitely look nice on your photos. Which gondola should you choose?
Since gondolas looked alike, my friends and I went for the best-looking gondolier so that we can have nice photos. True enough, the pictures turned out very well. Hence, the ‘gondolier selection principle’ was discovered.
Now, let’s get back to the angkasawan selection process. The government has already mentioned that this space adventure will appear in primary school books to promote science among young children. So, you need a poster boy to get on the posters, magazines and books. So, whom will you choose?
According to foreign media, Dr Sheik Muszaphar will be the country’s first angkasawan. Did he pass the ‘gondolier selection principle’?

One day, every Malaysian child can aspire to go to space at the public’s expense - if they’re pretty enough.
